Gordon Hopkins (American born, 1965) imbues the everyday with bold colours, a sort of naive style infused with emotion and depth. Patterns, colours, still life, gardens, sardines, landscapes to lemons all come together. The everyday objects and images he experiences generates new ideas. Images from man made to the natural environment contribute to this colourful collection. « In my work as an artist it is very important for me to explore the use of bold colours with many layers, repetition and larger then life formate. I like to accentuate or exaggerate a sometimes ordinary object or image. The composition sometimes breaks down into an imaginary world of outlines and colourful backgrounds creating depth and movement. » His representation emphasises the beauty and perhaps overlooked context of things in our lives. Gordon Hopkins studied art at Principia college, Elsah Illinois and later studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Colorado, Denver and now lives and works in Brussels Belgium. He works primarily with Oil on linen and board. He also has begun to explore working with three dimensional pieces. Visual simplicity, balance and powerful layers of colour are the key elements in his work. « It is often just the simple things that can have a great impact and become very important in my work and our lives. »
The imaginary garden
